Key Terms

This section aims to provide clarity on the terminology we use throughout the Alarms module.

  • Alarm Rule: An Alarm Rule is the set of conditions, Equipment and configuration that together determine when, and against which Equipment, an Alarm should be opened.
  • Alarm: An Alarm is created when the conditions defined in an Alarm Rule evaluate as true for a specific piece of Equipment. Each Alarm is linked to a particular piece of Equipment and represents a specific Alarm Type. At any given time, only one Alarm of a specific Alarm Type can be active for a piece of Equipment.
  • Alarm Type: An Alarm Type refers to a specific category or classification that identifies the nature of the Alarms being opened by a given Alarm Rule. These are unique to your organization and can be used in a way that makes sense for your operations.
  • Alarm Severity: An Alarm Severity classifies the priority of Alarms based on their urgency and potential impact on systems, processes, or safety.
  • Alarm Status: An Alarm Status indicates the lifecycle stage of the Alarm e.g. 'open' or 'closed'
  • Condition: A set of criteria defined as part of an Alarm Rule that must evaluate to true for an Alarm to be opened. An Alarm Rule may consist of multiple conditions.
  • Expression: Used to describe parts of an Alarm Rule condition.
  • Duration: Used to describe the period of time for which an Alarm Rule or Condition must evaluate to true before it will trigger an Alarm.
  • Primary Equipment: Primary Equipment refers to the Equipment that an Alarm Rule is being applied to.
  • Remote Equipment: Remote Equipment refers to any Equipment that an Alarm Rule condition may reference as part of its determination. It may or may not be part of the Primary Equipment.
