What is Peak Shaving?

An energy optimisation strategy that reduces energy consumption during periods of high demand. Businesses use peak shaving to avoid costly peak demand charges from the grid by either reducing energy consumption or switching to alternative power sources like batteries or generators during peak times. This helps lower operational costs, reduce strain on the grid, and improve energy efficiency—especially when integrated with solar and storage systems.

How Peak Shaving Works in Your Energy System

The ONE Controller monitors total site load using meters on the main incomer. When the measured grid import approaches the configured peak threshold, the controller automatically dispatches BESS power or curtails non-critical flexible loads to keep grid import below the limit. Using import limitation parameters, this can be done dynamically or with scheduling to support BESS dispatching at specific times when the demand is high.

Example Use Case of Commercial Peak Shaving

The Site:

We were approached by a food processing facility with a 300 kW peak load, and an MIC contract limit of 250 kW.

The Challenge:

Frequent production surges were causing cause grid imports to exceed the MIC, triggering costly and frequent penalties.

The Solution:

The ONE Controller monitors the main incomer and dispatches a 200 kWh BESS to shave peaks whenever the load exceeds 240 kW. This maintains imports below 250 kW and eliminates monthly penalty charges.
